A rare defense

Those who are critical of the White House and its "response" to Vice President Dick Cheney's hunting accident are missing the boat.

It is rare that I'll stand up for the blunder twins, Bush and Cheney, however, in a press conference today, members of the media lost sight of the important issues when questioning Scott McClellan about the incident.

Yes, it looks bad when a private citizen -- in this case the ranch owner -- alerts the media to an accident such as this. However, I think someone with even as cold a heart as Cheney probably had something else on his mind when he accidentally shot a close friend.

I know I would.

The media is missing out on an excellent opportunity to discuss hunting safety in a public venue.

A quick Google search showed the difficulty in obtaining accurate data about the numbers of people killed and injured in hunting accidents. Certainly, Hunters Education Courses, offered nationally, have done a great job at reducing these numbers.

Still, and I'm not a hunter, an opportunity was missed.

And the media, already underfire from the White House and its public relations firm Fox News, looked stupid as they attacked the Pillsbury Doughboy in today's conference.
